Find the right business or career for your personality type

Often, when people look for a career or business idea, they are driven by the desire for something that’s either fashionable, popular with significant others or likely to garner profits quickly and easily. In very few instances do people actually consider the role their personality type plays in choosing a vocation.

There are 4 main personality types, according to the DISC personality analysis: the Dominant personality, Influencial personality, Steady personality and the Cautious personality.

Most people are a combination of 2 personality types, with one personality type being more dominant than the other. Examples are the Dominant Cautious personality – where the Dominant personality type is considered to be the main personality type with hints of the Cautious personality type, or the Influencial Steady personality, where the Influential personality is regarded as the major personality type, and the Steady personality type features slightly.

There are rare instances, however, where a person can fall under one specific personality type and present as a pure form of that personality. This leads to a total of 12 different personality types.

Without further ado, we will now explore the 4 main personality types, their strengths and weaknesses, and how these affect your career or business choice.

1. The Dominant personality

Dominant personalities are driven, goal-focused, ambitious and forceful. They are high achievers who believe in winning at all costs, even it means disappointing or hurting those around them, and can come across as intimidating and angry.

Dominant personalities believe in success over everything and prioritise results over relationships. As a result, Dominant personalities can appear to be selfish, rude and emotionally disconnected, which makes people fear them.

The worst career or business options for Dominant personalities include Counseling, Therapy, Hospitality or Care giving, as they tend to lack patience and sensitivity. They, however, excel in tackling difficult and seemingly impossible challenges and thrive in high-pressure situations.

Their best career or business options include Management roles, Entrepreneurship, Physical Fitness, Sports Coaching as well as jobs in Law enforcement and the military.

2. The Influential personality

Influencial personalities, as the name suggests, are relationship-driven, creative, excitable and vibrant characters who tend to have a magnetic effect on people. They are often spontaneous, radical, and easy-going, and excel in careers or businesses that allow them to think on their feet, defy norms, and relate with people.

Influential personalities are highly vocal, charismatic, and have an unrivalled ability to motivate and inspire, which enables them to play a massive role in shaping the attitudes and beliefs of people around them. If you want to win people, send an Influential personality to them.

The Influential personality’s best career or business options include roles in Public Relations, Customer care, Media, Communications and Creative enterprise. Their worst careers or business options include roles which demand precision, constant repetition or strict adherence to rules and protocol, as they often lack the ability to pay attention to detail and are easily bored or distracted.

3. The Steady personality

The Steady personality is caring, peaceful and emotionally stable, showing neither extreme excitement (unlike the Influential personality) or extreme force (unlike the Dominant personality).

Steady personalities are excellent listeners who shy away from drama and controversy and believe in making the world a better place. They are non-judgmental and will maintain a calm demeanor and straight face even when faced with a shocking or unusual situation.

In instances where another personality type would respond with aggression or strong criticism, they offer meaningful solutions and a listening ear. As such, they thrive in roles that allow them to offer support and care, such as Caregiving, Nursing, Counseling and Therapy.

Steady personalities, due to their peaceful and compassionate nature, tend to shy away from positions or roles that require them to make difficult and unpopular decisions, exert pressure on people or deal with controversy. Consequently, they may struggle in leadership roles or jobs in the Legal field, Military, Physical Fitness Coaching and Debt collection.

4. The Cautious personality

The Cautious personality is highly analytical, focused and detail oriented, with a keen eye for accuracy and precision. They are excellent planners who think in logical terms and believe in reason over intuition.

Like the Dominant personality, Cautious personalities have no problem with making unpopular decisions or stepping on toes if this is supported by logic and will produce desired results. Cautious personalities are often shy and may prefer to work alone or behind the scenes, avoiding the public eye and the constant input or opinions of people, which they consider to be a hindrance to productivity.

Cautious personalities do exceptionally well in roles which demand planning, precision and analysis, such as Accounting and Finance, Chemistry, Biology, Statistics, Research, Engineering and Aviation. They may however struggle in careers or jobs which place a demand on them for public interaction and spontaneity, such as jobs in the Creative field, Public Relations and Communication.

I believe I have the steady personality. But show some traits of several of the other personalities. This was an interesting read and I didn’t think that finding a career would have anything to do with your personality.
